There I stood staring at my reflection in the mirror as I brushed my teeth. It was the end of another day, another really long day. Sickness plagued our family once again leaving me to tend to a sick husband and toddler. For whatever reason, God never saw fit to impart the sickness on me, but He did leave me to tend to the bodily functions, endless laundry, wads of tissue, and medicine alone (humanly speaking, of course).
That night as I prepared to sleep in the guest bedroom so as to continue avoiding whatever ailed my boys, I realized just how weary I had become.
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:9-10
Bone tired with fatigue. Sick of eating chicken noodle soup. I wanted a big slab of beefy meat from the grill for crying out loud. Teetering on the verge of tears, I remembered. Tomorrow is a new day. And God promises new mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:23).
Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you’re weary. Maybe you’ve been working tirelessly to pay the bills, tend the children, care for your parents, or mend a marriage. Whatever your burden, may I encourage you?
Our trials exist to draw us closer to God. Nothing is wasted by our loving Father. His word, His promise that He is working all things for our good and for His glory is true. First Kings 8:56 tells us that “not one word has failed of all his good promise.”
Charles Spurgeon says in his book, God Promises You (my emphasis added):
The promise is the forecast of the divine purpose, the shadow of the coming blessing. In fact, it is the token of God’s own nearness to us. We are cast upon God for the fulfillment of His engagements, and that is one of His reasons for dealing with us by using the method of promise. Perhaps if the Lord had dropped our mercies at our door without a previous hint of their coming, we would not have cared to know from what source they came. If He had sent them with unbroken regularity, even as He makes His sun to rise every morning, we might have slighted them as common results of natural laws. We might have forgotten God because of the punctuality of His providence. Certainly we would have lacked the understanding of the being and loving-kindness of God that we now receive as we read the promise, accept it by faith, plead it in prayer, and in due season see it fulfilled (pages 91-92).
Tonight, take a good long look in the mirror and remember. Tomorrow, when the sun rises over the mountain, the plains, or the lake, wherever you are, remember God’s promises are true. He will sustain us. He will carry us. He will fulfill His promises to us. We can trust Him.
Weeping may tarry for a night, but joy comes with the morning. – Psalm 30:5b
Thank you for this post. Very inspiring and on time. I have been feeling weary and tired for a while now. Leaning on God’s strength through my everyday.
I am with you, Donna! His grace is sufficient!
This is SO wonderful, Leigh Ann! I’ve been thinking about faith, prayer and providence lately as I read through Matthew. Love the Spurgeon quote — it just goes to show how well our Maker knows our hearts. And how He does everything to enhance our relationship with Him.
I hope Samuel and your big “boy” are feeling much better today.
We love Spurgeon in this house. We’re always pulling him out for encouragement. Everyone is on the mend. Thanks!
Thank you for the inspiration! My heart needed this. 🙂
You’re welcome. I’m glad you were encouraged!
Thank you for the reminder! I needed this today!
You’re welcome, Anne! It was timely for me as well. I had to re-read it a few times this morning.
Thanks for the encouragement! I’m reading through the Old Testament right now and just got to the book of Job and I came across this same thing in my Bible reading this morning.
I love how God affirms what He is teaching us! Thanks for sharing, Jami!
This is such an encouragement, thank you Leigh Ann. What beautiful photos you have on this post as well! I’ve got some wonderful tree tops to look at in my bedroom every morning. Such a blessing is His nature!
Nicole
Thank you, Nicole! This was at our home in Tennessee. We lived on a little peninsula and the sunrise and sunset was just amazing! Of course, we have beauty in Colorado too. It is amazing really the vastness of the beauty in God’s creation. I never cease to be amazed!
What an inpiraional post and amazing pictures. Thanks for sharing:)
