Several years ago now, soon after we welcomed our third child to our family, my life felt a wee bit out of control.
I was being intentional. I was putting first things first. I was saying no to anything and everything I could. But I still felt like I was at the end of myself. I could often be heard saying, “I feel like I’m meeting myself coming right now.”
And I was…
I had three little kids, five and under, who needed my every moment, and it was all I could do to find time for a shower – let alone spend uninterrupted time in the Word.
When the new year rolled around, I felt the Lord press upon my heart the single word: STEADY.
I could just imagine Him saying, “Steady now. Steady now, my daughter. This too shall pass, but you must stand firm and persevere.”
I wrote Psalm 112:5-8 in my journal:
“It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.”
I reminded myself that steadfastness comes as I make the moment-by-moment choice to give of myself just one more time, putting aside my own needs (and even selfish desires) to give one more time to the needs of my family.
- One more grocery trip
- One more diaper change
- Attend to my garden one more time
- Cook one more healthy meal
- Do the dishes one more time
- Fold one more load of laundry
Not every season is as physically taxing as that particular season was to me, but the choice to stand steadfast, immovable as the nurturer of my family did not go unnoticed.
The Lord was faithful to meet me time and again, supplying strength and grace to go another round.
Are you walking out your own season of weariness?
Then, we have something for you.
Just as I had to choose steadfastness many years ago, you can make that choice to stand firm in your faith, too.
You can make the choice to reflect your Creator God in the steadfastness of His love to those within your sphere of influence.
You don’t have to be a stay-at-home mom of small children to feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, to feel as though nothing you’re doing is making a lasting difference.
Maybe you’re a student being ridiculed for your faith…
Maybe you’re a caregiver to your aging parents…
Maybe you’re believing God for a child so you can start your family…
Wherever you are in your journey, steadfastness is needed.
As I contemplated how to compile this month’s Bible reading plan, I kept thinking about the steadfastness of God, and through Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to stand steadfast in the trials and joys of life.
With the help my amazing team, we’ve compiled 21 verses that focus on who God is, what He has accomplished through Christ, and what He wants to do through you as you stand steadfast in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
