Dear New Mama Who is Pregnant for the First Time

Dear new mama who is pregnant for the first time,

First, congratulations! What a joy that you are with child!

The wonder that fills you as you begin to dream about the baby hidden away in the secret parts of your womb, the baby a size of a pin prick, the baby that will one day fill your arms and heart so full you’ll swear you’ll burst from it all, this wonder is overwhelmingly exciting!

It’s only the beginning. You have many more days of joy ahead of you. The road to motherhood is beautiful. It’s sacred.

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my motherโ€™s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.ย  ~Psalm 139:13-4

New mama, take time to sing a few praises.

Celebrate the life within you. It’s worth celebrating!

Yet, I know with the excitement comes fear. This fear makes celebration bittersweet as you contemplate the what if’s and confusion of your first time to be with child.

You wonder if this is normal. You wonder if what you’re eating is safe. Wait, what? Some foods aren’t safe for pregnancy?

You contemplate when to announce your pregnancy. You wonder if you’ll miscarry. Should you wait until you’re safely into the second trimester? How do you share your news?

Will you be a good mom?

Will you be able to afford another human being with your already meager paycheck?

The list of worries and wonders when you’re pregnant for the first time are endless it seems. And the moment you see that positive sign staring back, it all seems to come rushing in.

But here is the truth, new mama.

This baby deep inside of you, ever so small, is a child of God. A child that God gave to you to take care of whether for a day or for years.

I know you’re wondering if everything is okay. You can’t see your belly bulge just yet and so much is still yet unknown. It’s hard to believe there is a little life within you, isn’t it?

But there is and that life belongs to God. And God has given this little baby to you. Rejoice! Cherish this day.

New mama, it is time to trust God with things that you cannot see.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. ~Psalm 139:15-16

Take your time as you ease into this pregnancy. You’ll have plenty of time to pick out your nursery theme, choose a name, and decide whether you’ll cloth diaper or not.

There are decisions and things to think about, but can I give you a little word of advice?

Slow down.

Take it in.

Smile.

Place your hand over your womb.

And savor this moment.

Because in a few weeks, if it hasn’t happened yet, you’re going to wonder where this moment went as you battle morning sickness, eat three meals in one sitting, and sleep for hours and hours and hours.

After that, you’re hormones will change again, and you’ll be in full on planning mode. I even deep cleaned my garage with my second child. Crazy.

Oh and that’s the other thing. You’re going to feel a little crazy sometimes.

You’ll cry at the strangest moments. You’ll get angry at silly things. But just remember to take it to the Lord. Pregnancy isn’t something else to complain about. God created you for this purpose. He’ll know how to help you battle what comes.

You have an exciting, but long road ahead of you. Don’t miss this opportunity to just thank God for that which He has created within you.

Come what may, God knows what He’s doing and He loves you … and your sweet baby.

These words were truly inspiring for me. As an unmarried 19-year-old college student expecting her first child in November, it’s easy to get caught up in all of the things wrong with this pregnancy. However, God’s timing is perfect, and He knows what he’s doing! I must say, he has quite a sense of humor for allowing us, as humans, to plan things out, knowing He is the one who is actually in charge!

I’m a first time mom and just found out via Clear Blue that I’m expecting and probably about 4 -5 weeks! My husband and I are so excited and scared. I have so many questions, fears and worries but I just give it up to God and have faith. I love everything about this post!. It really helps put everything in perspective. Thank you for that. ๐Ÿ™‚
