8 Bible Verses for When You Want to Quit

I have started and stopped each task ten times today, including writing this post. The dishes took me three times as long to complete as usual. Breakfast and lunch were each an hour late. I didn’t even try on dinner – pizza night it is. I give up.

In the last week, my mother-in-love has come for a visit; my husband contracted the flu bug that he’s still not fully recovered from; we celebrated my son’s third birthday promptly followed by his succumbing to the flu; my baby decided sleeping was no longer okay and has screamed almost non-stop – what happened to my pleasant, easy going child?

Every surface in my home is covered in clutter and messes that I will get to later. I hope. My life has been turned upside down, and if one more person says, “I need…” I might lose it. It takes everything in me to not break down and cry (again). Better yet, it’s grace that I don’t go running from the house, quitting motherhood and screaming, “Mercy!”

It’s these sort of days that I need Jesus all the more. Maybe you’re having one of those days. Let’s allow God’s Word to wash over us, encouraging us to persevere and rely on His grace to persevere.

8 Bible Verses for When You Want to Quit

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. ~Galatians 6:9

But he said to me, “My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ~2 Corinthians 12:9

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. ~Matthew 6:34

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ~Matthew 11:28

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. ~Matthew 16:24-25

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. ~John 15:5

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. ~Isaiah 40:29-31

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. ~Psalm 51:10-12

  1. I am so with you in this!!! I have a baby that’s about your baby’s age, pregnant with another one that’s coming in April (it was a surprise) and a 6 and 4 year old that I homeschool. We moved across the country just before I found out I was pregnant. Life has just been BUSY!!!! I feel like I don’t reach around and sometimes wonder if I was actually created for motherhood! I know it’s not true and that this is just a crazy season in my life that will pass. I drink from God’s grace and mercy daily for survival!! He’s the only ‘thing’ that keeps me going!
Wanted to point out, though, that your baby could be teething. My daughter was doing the same thing a while back. She had me confused till I discovered she’s cutting her first teeth. The symptoms of discomfort can come a whole month or so before the actual teeth erupt.
Hoping n praying for brighter days ahead for you!

    1. Rosann, I put his amber necklace on him yesterday that someone gifted to me. I don’t know if it’s the “cure,” but he slept for 14 hours last night (12 of those straight)! It could have just been the end of this phase, or it very well could be teeth. I just know I was ready to break yesterday. I even cried out in anguish, “Oh God, don’t give me anymore of these. I can’t go through this anymore.” And then you reach the other side and realize, He always, always provides. These trials are merely meant to point us to Him, to lean into His grace, and rely on His strength. Oh how I fight to do things my way in my own strength. I’m so thankful for God’s word … and for babies who finally sleep. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Leigh-Ann, can I join you in declaring one of those weeks! I’ve felt like things have been ganging up on me too. I have felt like giving up. I am so glad that you are so committed to holding on to the grace of God and communicating that to encourage and restore others who are going through the same ups and downs of life. Thanks for this collection of wonderful verses of wisdom that we can hold on to at the times when we want to hide under our duvets! Hope your family get better soon and you can have some rest.

  3. I am having a hard time with my baby not sleeping. It has been so discouraging for many months. It is hard in the middle of the night to know what to do. I need encouragement because I am struggling with anger towards god and this challenge. Thank you for posting truths, my heart is so wavering at times. Sleep deprivation is a killer for mamas of young children!

I need much grace and care from Jesus!

  4. Today was a breaking day for me. My 20 year old son has autism and bipolar disorder, seizures, and is intellectually disabled. I have a 17 year old son who has ADHD and believes with all his heart his mama is stupid, and a 4 year old who was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. My mother lives with us; she takes the oldest kid’s autistic meltdowns personally, like they are against her. My husband works, comes home, and sits in his recliner. Today was a very bad autistic day. I am completely overwhelmed to the point of tears, which are flowing as I type this. I am so worn out from everything, including trying to be a blogger, build my website audience and share Jesus and I feel so unworthy when my own house is emotionally overwhelmed. I saw this post and prayed the Scriptures you shared. And I’m praying tonight for peace. I’m sorry I unloaded… I guess I felt safe. Sigh.

    1. Oh, Mama … I’m so sorry. That sounds terribly hard. Praying you receive peace and rest in this season of life. God is faithful. Trials are meant to draw us nearer to Him. Praying you can cling to the One who created you and loves you with unstoppable, unconditional love!

  5. Bless your heart! Those days, weeks, or even months that try us for all we are, when we desperately need the strength only the Lord can provide definitely show us His faithfulness.

It has been a rough few years in our lives so consider a big virtual hug coming your way. Praying your life has calmed dramatically.

God bless you and those you love!
