15 Games to Play as a Couple

Are you looking for fun board games to play together as a couple? The following games are perfect for two players, and even better when played with your spouse or significant other!

Being intentional to put a date night on the calendar with your spouse is so important to having a thriving marriage.

Far too often, our relationships go from fun and exciting in the dating years, to cold and business-like once the spark of honeymoon bliss wears off.

If we want to have strong marriages, we need to make friendship with our spouse a priority, and what better way to do that than by having a game night?!

Game night is definitely one of our favorite ways to spend a date night in.

It’s a great way to unwind together and share a little healthy competition. Plus, it’s FUN. And as a 7 on the enneagram, fun is my middle name!

Rarely a week goes by that Mark and I don’t pull out a board game or a deck of cards to have a go at each other’s pride!

Through the years, we have discovered several games that we go back to time and time again, and I wanted to share them with you!!

Kingdomino – This is a new to us game. We actually bought it to play with our kids (ages 8 and 5 years old), but we’ve found it just as fun to play after they’re in bed. It mixes all the fun of strategy with a little luck, while simultaneously not having to think too hard after a long day with young(er) kiddos (we have a 3 year old too).

Settlers of Catan – This game isn’t typically two-player, and it certainly is more fun with more people. However, if you take the robber out of play like we do when it’s just the two of us, you can play two-player and have lots of fun. Of course you don’t have to take him out, but we’ve found removing his influence from the game seems to even the playing field quite well.

Ticket to Ride – Another one that is certainly more fun with more people, however, this is probably our #1 played board game. We love the strategy of this game (of course, mixed with luck), and it plays quickly, so we aren’t up all night battling it out.

Rummikub – This is a slower-paced game that is so much fun. It’s great for stretching your mind a little. We always have a blast with this one.

Qwirkle Board Game – This is a simple game of matching colors and shapes, but complex enough to keep you engaged.

Battleship Game – Yes, you likely played this game as a child, but who cares. It’s still just as fun now as it was then! Curled up on the couch with your feet in each others’ laps, this is a great, relaxing game to pass the night in.

Scattergories Game – Anything with words, I’m in! We love this fast paced game of thinking of words in different categories.

Scrabble – Another word game that’s a classic. Does it even need a description?

Boggle – Mix the cubes, set the timer and find as many words as you can. Come up with more words than your opponent and you win! We love this game! Or rather I love this game. My husband would love it more if he could ever beat me.

Sorry! – Another game you played as a kid, but trust me, it’s just as much fun as a couple!

Monopoly – It’s a classic. Generally, Mark beats me. However, there are those rare, but very fun occasions, when I hoard hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place leaving him broke as a joke. It’s glorious.

Blokus Duo – We keep this one by the bed. It’s a great strategy game that is very spatial. Interestingly, I’m not great at logic or spatial activities, yet I almost always beat Mark’s socks off. We’ve even played this game into the wee hours of the morning at Ihop on one of our weekend getaways!

Sequence – Great mix of board game and cards. This game is addicting. We are pretty evenly matched on this one, so it’s always up for grabs who will win.

Yahtzee– Our first year of marriage, this is all we played. We called it Yahtzee Wars. True story: We left a New Year’s Eve party early so we could go home and battle it out until midnight. We played as many Yahtzee games as we could until the ball dropped! It was INTENSE! In case you’re wondering, I won the 2008 Yahtzee Wars. Sadly, no one believed us when we said this was our reason for leaving early.

Jitters Word Game – I found this game buried under some children’s games at a local children’s consignment sale. It was  a huge event, and the line to check out was about a mile long. I was sifting through the tables of stuff along the way and discovered this little jewel … for a dollar! One solitary buck! It’s the classic model in great condition. I didn’t even know what a steal it was until I searched it on Amazon for this post! It’s a very fun game. You roll the alphabet dice; and you get cards; and you make words; and you do it all really, really fast with this buzzer thing chiming as you try to make your words; and it’s just crazy fun. You have to try it. *breathe* It’s so fun! But beware. It gets kind of loud! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. We just discovered Qwirkle too… lots of fun! We also play Battleships (a game I can actually beat my husband at!!!) and Scrabble (he always beats me but I still love playing). Great ideas! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. We love Sequence and Blokus. We also just discovered Iota. I carry it in my purse and we’ve been known to pull it out at a coffee shop for a cheap, fun date night OUT. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. We love games too! I am intrigued by Qwirkle. We enjoy playing family games – Pit, Dutch Blitz, Uno Attack, but we don’t play as a just a couple very often. Thank you for the suggestions!

  4. My husband and I used to love to play games together but haven’t made a regular habit of it in a while because I’m so exhausted at the end of the night. However, now that my baby is sleeping through the night regularly (Praise the Lord!!!) we have tried to start playing occasionally again. It’s actually how we spent Valentine’s night.

Our favorite is Settlers of Catan. We also like Scrabble, Pentago (this one really makes you think but is much faster paced), and a newer one called Agricola (similar to Settlers but a little more complicated).

With friends, we also like playing the dice game Farkle (or Greed as we learned it). It’s a great game to play while also carrying on a conversation because it doesn’t require a lot of thought.

  5. Can I add laser tag to that list?! It so much fun and great physical exercise too. We play in the woods but it’s just as much fun to play at home with all the lights out!

  6. We love to play Cribbage, Backgammon, Mancala and Jenga! I have been meaning to get Battleship for a while now, though.
