Do you ever feel completely unorganized? Like your life is spinning out of control and you need at least a week to get caught up?
Our homes are a place to lay our heads and lay our young. A place where family gathers and fellowship is shared. A place where singing and silliness mix. A place where dreams are shared and prayers are prayed.
When our homes spin out of control and we feel completely unorganized, it creates stress in our hearts and in our relationships.
Homemaking matters. Not for the mere sake of keeping a tidy home, but it matters because when the storms are swirling around you, your family needs a sanctuary.
You need a sanctuary.
Your family needs a place to come and be safe and be restored.
Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your alters, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! (Psalm 84:3-4)
When there is no peace in your home, it’s hard to rest. Let alone sing praises to the King of Kings!
Here are 7 Things You Can Do Right Now to Feel More Organized
1. Have a brain dump session
When you feel overwhelmed, relying on your memory to get things done is not effective.
2. Make your bed
I’ve told you why I make my bed everyday.
When you make your bed, 75% of the room is already tidy!
3. Declutter flat surfaces
I don’t know about your house, but my kitchen counters and dining room table can pile up faster than a snowfall in Alaska. Or as my friend, Amy, says, “[Clutter] multiplies faster than a furry rodent under a full moon.”
Clutter makes for great analogies, don’t you think? That’s about all it’s good for.
Clutter begets clutter.
Clearing the piles means you’re curbing the temptation to just keep adding to it.
4. Jot down a meal plan
Trying to figure out what to feed my hungry boys day-in and day-out can get stressful when I don’t have a plan.
Writing out a simple meal plan can free my mind to focus on other important tasks around my home. Here is my method for meal planning here.
5. Do one load of laundry
When life is crazy, laundry piles up. That’s just the way it goes.
So, purpose to do just one load of laundry from start to finish.
Bonus: If you have clean laundry sitting in baskets, just eat the frog and put it all away. Just do it.
6. Update your finances
I wanted to say: balance your checkbook. Then I realized, we don’t really do that anymore, do we?
The point remains though – get a handle on your finances by updating your budget.
7. Fill one box with donations
Remember all those clutter analogies? They apply here too.
Go around your home and fill up one entire box with stuff to giveaway. If you don’t love it, need it, use it, or ________ (you fill in the blank), then toss it in the box.
Don’t spend a lot of time on this. Just do a quick sweep and fill it up!
Although these seven tasks won’t organize your entire home, they will help you feel more organized. At least a little bit. And feeling more organized is half the battle. The other half is just getting started.
