As I have sought to learn all there is to know about fat, one thing I have learned is to keep it simple. It’s easy to get confused and discouraged when trying to remember what’s good for me and what is bad.

Here our list of fats we use on a daily basis:

For Salads:

Use Olive Oil. Olive Oil is best used cold due to its tendency to break down under high temperatures. When you use olive oil cold, you ensure retention of all the wonderful nutrients.

  • Rich in Vitamin E
  • Full of powerful antioxidants (polyphenols)

We use Olive Oil for salads almost always. The only exception is my homemade Probiotic Ranch Dressing.

One of my more famous dressings is my Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Dressing. It is requested often (even by those who eat a conventional diet ;) ).

Leigh Ann’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Dressing:

In a pint size mason jar combine the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (you can substitute Balsamic Vinegar as well)
  • 2 cups olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • minced garlic (1-3 cloves)
  • 1 t thyme
  • 1 t basil
  • 1/2 t onion powder
  •  t dry mustard (optional)

Put the lid on the jar and give it a good shake. Store in refrigerator.

Note: It will solidify in the refrigerator. I will just pull the jar out when I start cooking to let it come to room temperature (or at least liquify).

For cooking:

Use butter liberally. The best butter is the kind you get from a local farmer. Your butter should be more on the orange-y side (is that a word?). Most butters that you find in the supermarket will be a pale yellow color.

I want to quote something for you from the book Real Food: What to Eat and Why by Nina Planck. This book has been invaluable! I highly, highly recommend it.

In her chapter on Real Fats, she explained the reason for consuming full fat milk and entire eggs. It is a lengthy quote, but completely worth your time to read, I think. It was a complete paradigm shift for me. My emphasis added.

Consider, for example, two near-perfect foods: eggs and milk. Both foods are a complete nutritional package, designed for a growing organism’s exclusive nutrition, and must contain everything the body needs to assimilate the nutrients they contain. Thus the fats in the egg yolk aid digestion of the protein in the white, and lecithin in the yolk aids metabolism of its cholesterol. The butterfat in milk facilitates protein digestion, and saturated fat in particular is required to absorb the calcium. Calcium, in turn, requires vitamins A and D to be properly assimilated, and they are found only in the butterfat. Finally, Vitamin A is required for production of bile salts that enable the body to digest protein. Without the butterfat, then, you don’t get the best of the protein, fat-soluble vitamins, or calcium from milk. That’s why I don’t eat, and cannot recommend, egg white omelets and skim milk. They are low-quality, incomplete foods (page 181).

Therefore, cooking with butter is a good idea because of it’s high saturation level. This means it can be heated to higher temperatures before breakdown (smoking) occurs. It is a much less delicate fat. By keeping it intact, your body has a better chance of properly assimilating all the nutrients from the food you are cooking. Not to mention, your food will taste better.

Use a combination of olive oil and butter. Most of us probably use olive oil for our cooking needs. We’ve been told it’s healthy and good for us. I’ve told you some of the possible troubles with olive oil when heated, but I think this will be a hard one to give up for most. However, due to olive oil’s delicate nature, I would submit that you at least use half olive oil, half butter when sauteing. The butter, which is much more stable, will help the olive oil stay in tact.

Use Coconut Oil. This is hands down my favorite oil for cooking. Did you know that the Polynesians, who eat coconuts and coconut oil every day, call it the “Tree of Life?” Coconut oil has been used for centuries, but went out of fashion when saturated fats were said to be bad for you. Thankfully, coconut oil is making its reappearance.

Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain saturated fatty acids, which do not have to be emulsified by bile acids before they are digested. Research shows that the medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil boosts the body’s metabolism, raises body temperatures, and helps provide greater energy which can lead to weight loss.

Additionally, coconut oil’s main fat, lauric acid, is an antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral fatty acid, which is also found in breast milk. Interestingly enough, Dr. Mary Enig suggests the average adult include about 3.5 tablespoons of coconut oil per day in their diet to take in an equivalent amount of lauric acid that a nursing infant would receive from breast milk. Furthermore, research shows that lauric acid helps build immunity and protects against (and even said to kill) many infectious diseases, such as HIV, measles, herpes, strep, and more.

Pretty impressive track record, if you ask me.

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, which lengthens its shelf life and makes things flaky when used for baking. As a cooking oil, its chemical structure is kept in tact and therefore is resistant to mutations of fatty acid chains even when used in higher cooking temperatures, unlike most vegetable oils.

Where to buy Coconut Oil?

Finally, I have found that coconut is a scary oil for those who aren’t used to cooking with it.

For this reason, I was excited when Tropical Traditions asked me to try out a jar of their 32-oz. – Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil. We had been using another brand of coconut oil for years. As  a result, I was prepared to be disappointed in Tropical Traditions. Alas, I was not. They have won me over.

Tropical Traditions’ coconut oil is by far the best I have ever had. I found myself dipping a spoon into the jar and eating the coconut oil raw. Yum!

We also used the oil for scrambling eggs, sauteing squash and zucchini, smoothies, and a spread on our toast. I learned that Samuel will eat anything if there is enough coconut oil on it. ;) He loves sucking on veggies to get all the coconut oil out first.

What I like about Tropical Traditions is their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil  is that it is not mass produced. It is made by families who are coconut farmers using old-fashioned traditional methods that have been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years. Their coconut trees and family producers are certified organic according to strict USDA standards. The families who produce the oil are also trained according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards and re-certified each year.

How can you get a jar of Tropical Traditions coconut oil?

Right now they have a sale for 2 jars – 32-oz. ea. – Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil – BUY 1 GET 1 FREE!, which means you get two jars of coconut oil for $40.00. This is a steal.

Save Money by Culturing Foods with DIY Starters from Cultures for Health

There are many health benefits to eating cultured foods, but buying pre-made kefir, yogurt, sourdough bread, or Kombucha (just to name a few) can be expensive.

If you have been hanging around Intentional By Grace for long, then you know that my family enjoys cultured foods, especially kefir. You also know that I have a hard time staying within my grocery budget each month.

So how do I justify the cost of store bought kefir? Well, I don’t. Instead, I make it myself.

Did you know that you can make your own fermented foods for a fraction of the cost by using a starter culture?

If I were to buy kefir from the store, it would cost me anywhere from $3.99 to $6.99 – for one single quart. On the other hand, I can purchase raw milk for $7 a gallon and make two quarts of kefir. Financially, it just makes sense.

Not to mention, kefir is incredibly easy to make. Can you pour milk in a jar? Ok then, you can make your own kefir!

The same could be said for other fermented foods that you wish to add to your diet, or are already in your diet and you’re paying a pretty penny for – like Kombucha.

Making your own fermented foods ensures that your family’s digestive health is being cared for, as well as knowing each and every ingredient that goes into your food. You can do all of this for a fraction of the cost of store bought brands.

Where do I get my starters?

The cheapest and most ideal way to get your starter cultures is from a friend, a neighbor, a family member or someone else you know. Ask if they wouldn’t mind sharing. Most likely they will happily agree!

For those of you who don’t have this sort of access (and most people I know don’t), then let me introduce you to Cultures for Health. This is where I get all of my starter cultures.

Cultures for Health Starter Cultures and Supplies for Real Food

This online store carries just about any kind of starter you can think of!

In addition to their dairy kefir, I have used their water kefir starter (a husband favorite), and making Kombucha is on my 30 things to do before 30 list. I have heard of others using their Yogurt and Sourdough starters with great success!

At Cultures for Health, their prices are reasonable and their culture varieties are just amazing. They have flat rate shipping of only $3.99, which might even be less than the cost of gas to go get a starter, depending how far you have to go!

Click here for Cheese Making Supplies

I must mention another reason to consider buying from a site like Cultures for Health rather than getting them from someone you don’t really know is the quality of the starters. Cultures are simple to use, yes, but if someone hasn’t cared for their culture well, or has used it with less-than-ideal ingredients, or with the wrong utensils (metal spoons instead of wooden or plastic, etc.), it may not work as well for you. Of course, these aren’t necessarily deal breakers, but just something to be aware of.

Not to mention, the instructions and support available to you from Cultures for Health are helpful, especially if you’re unsure of what you’re doing! Their website is simply amazing – a host of information at your fingertips even if you don’t purchase your starters from them.

So if you’re in the market for fermenting your own foods, check out Cultures for Health. It’s my go to spot for all of my culturing needs.

Juppy Baby Walker Review and Giveaway (Ends 8/26)

When I heard about the Juppy baby walker, I was intrigued. My son has enjoyed (and insisted) on standing up since he was eight weeks old. My back would get so tired holding his little hands so that he could enjoy standing up. I had to give the Juppy a try.

What is a Juppy Baby Walker?

The Juppy- isn’t the name catchy?- is a parent assisted baby walker that fits in a purse. It’s made of 100% cotton, and it is machine washable. It comes in pink, blue, or black. The straps are also adjustable, which is great since I’m tall – I was afraid I would still have to bend over. Not to mention, one-size fits all; you won’t have to buy more than one.

How it works.

From their website:

The baby is placed safely in the seat of the Juppy, and while standing upright the parent simply holds on to the soft cotton straps giving the baby confidence and support.

Typically parents tend to hold their babies by the hands or under the arms to teach them to walk. This causes stress and strain on the lower back of the parent and could cause injuries to the child’s arms or joints. The Juppy Baby Walker reduces your pain and eliminates possible injury to your child.

Why we like it.

Samuel has always loved standing up. Now that he is becoming more and more mobile, he loves being upright even more! The Juppy allows me to let him stand up and even bounce around while I have a conversation with another adult. *gasp* ;)

You know, I think it is easier if I just show you. Click on the video below to see the Juppy in action {if you’re reading through email, you may need to click through}!

We really enjoy the Juppy. It’s unique design, and easy to use nature means that we use it on an almost daily basis. As Samuel starts cruising, I suspect we will enjoy the Juppy even more. I can’t report yet on whether or not it actually helps my baby start walking sooner, but I think it’s a great tool for me to use to be intentional with Samuel. It allows me to spend focused time with my son without pawning him off on a gadget that will occupy him while I do other things (I have enough of those distractions, ;) ).

How can you get yours?

The Juppy is available online, and it retails for $29.95. For more information, you can check out their website, TheJuppy.com.

Now for the fun part. Juppy has offered to giveaway one of their baby walkers to one of my readers!

Here’s how to enter:

Flirty Aprons Are A Must In My Kitchen

When Mark and I got married, one of the things I asked for was a “pretty” apron. Call me old fashioned, but I love aprons. I have many memories of dropping in to visit my grandmother, and she would greet me at the door with her hair pinned up, wearing a pretty apron, and drying her hands on a dish towel. I couldn’t help but smile and think, I want to be like that when I grow up. I suppose she made homemaking attractive.

I think the apron was not only functional, but created a sense of warmth when she greeted me at the door. Well, that and she always loved kissing you while warning you that she wasn’t expecting company she could kiss, and she ate an onion right before you walked up. ;)

Nevertheless, I have been on the hunt for pretty aprons ever since. However, if you know me, I’m pretty slow at making decisions (unless it’s carpet we’re talking about, and I can make a decision in point five seconds – ask my mother-in-love). Anyways, it took me three years to break down and actually buy myself an apron.

I am glad that I waited because I finally found some adorable aprons for a reasonable price. Insert FlirtyAprons.com! They are always running a sale of some sort, and I snagged this one for less than 20 bucks about a month ago! Isn’t it adorable? The baby too, of course!

I love how happy and cheerful my apron is. Mark always smiles when he sees me in my apron. I have to admit it makes me smile quite a bit too. I may not always get my hair brushed (like on the day this picture was taken), and I may be THAT woman who is bare foot with a baby on her hip wearing spit up on her sleeve. However, just throw a cheerful apron over top of it all, and I feel so feminine and look cute while I work. It’s an instant boost to a day that could be heading south quickly.

For me, the apron represents love, gentleness, and joy. These are fruits of the spirit that I want to exude. These are the fruits of the spirit that make it impossible for those who grace my home, as well as me, of course, to not think about God. To be sure, the apron is not “the fix,” but it is a tool for helping me make my goal a reality. I feel so homey and welcoming when I’m wearing my apron.

And because I love it so much, I wanted to share with you a sale that Flirty Aprons has right now on their Sugar and Spice Apron.

Today only (8/8) they are having a 50% off Flash Sale on the Sugar & Spice apron. You can use the code SUGAR50. How cute is this one? I love how feminine it looks. I think the fun ruffles on the bottom would make me want to salsa in the kitchen. No, I have no idea how to salsa, but it sounds fun doesn’t it?

If you’ve been on the hunt for a fun apron at a reasonable price, then check out Flirty Aprons. They have so many fun designs. I think they make perfect gifts! I’m thinking about getting a few to have on hand. I can think of a few women who would love these aprons.

And just an fyi of sorts … I do keep a Flirty Aprons banner in my sidebar. You can click through whenever you like to check out other apron patterns. Don’t think this is just for women. They have some pretty stud aprons for the men in your life as well. Every grill man needs his own apron if you ask me. ;)

What do you think? Are you an apron wearer? What other things do you use/do throughout your day to make you feel feminine and pretty even when your covered in spit up like me?

I was not asked to write about this product. It’s a product that I use and enjoy and thought you would too. However, this post does contain my affiliate links. You can view my disclosure policy here.

Dale Shea’s Prenatal Pilates DVD Review and Giveaway

Now that our little boy, Samuel, has made his appearance, and we’ve decided to keep him ;) , I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what I want to do differently next time around in regards to my pregnancy. Since we had a wonderfully successful natural birth, I know that, Lord willing, I want to take that route again.

Unfortunately, as I have evaluated, I realized that I failed to dedicate the appropriate amount of time to preparing my body for a natural labor. As a result, I have resolved that next time, I want to be better prepared physically.

Although I am not pregnant now, I was excited to receive Prenatal Pilates with Dale Shea to try out. Dale’s pregnancy inspired her to choreograph and produce her own DVD, which would allow you to stay fit while pregnant. Having her own child has allowed her to be truly familiar with a Pilates pregnancy inside and out.

About the Instructor

Dale has ten years of experience working with many pregnant students of all ages and fitness levels, helping them stay healthy, happy and fit-both physically and mentally.

Dale received her comprehensive Pilates certification through The Physical Mind Institute in 2001. She holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science from The George Washington University. She also has two years experience as a physical therapy assistant.

For the past 10 years she has utilized her education, hands on experiences and dance background to build her own Pilates studio – Body Reformers.

In addition, she has taken workshops and classes with some of the nation’s most-renowned instructors. A believer in continuing education, Dale has most recently attended the March 2011 ECA conference in New York and the November 2010 PMA conference in Long Beach, CA.

About the DVD

Dale Shea’s Prenatal Pilates DVD is a personalized workout system modified for your body’s specific needs during pregnancy. There are four great workouts in one DVD. Plus a warm up and cool down!

  • Workout 1: Mat
  • Workout 2: Light Weights
  • Workout 3: Resistance Band
  • Workout 4: Stability Ball

Equipment: Mat, Resistance Band, Light Weights, and Stability Ball

Why Pilates?

According to Dale’s website:

Prenatal Pilates will allow you to bring balance back into your life, physically, physiologically, and emotionally. Balance your hormones to help you become more emotionally balanced. Stay fit and keep your balance and flexibility throughout your pregnancy. Additionally, you will maintain your muscle tone, keep the weight gain down and return to your pre-pregnancy body more quickly.

What I liked about the workout.

One of my biggest complaints about the Pilates videos I used during my pregnancy was that I did not feel as though I accomplished anything. They were too short, too long, or just plain boring.

Dale is approximately 31 weeks pregnant when doing this video. This was not only inspiring in and of itself, but I appreciated that it seemed to be a workout for her as well. Sometimes, when watching DVDs, you feel like you shouldn’t be sweating it out because the instructor makes it look too easy. Dale certainly makes it look easy, but she pairs it nicely with a good workout for herself.

Dale does a wonderful job of choreographing a workout that incorporates various muscle sets each time. Each workout feels like a complete workout since we address arms, legs, and abdominals each time. There is also a focus on balance, which is essential in every pregnancy, during each workout. After completing each workout, I feel like I have done something. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge that each workout presented.

My favorite workout was the resistance band. It is difficult to choose one over the other because they were all incredible, but I enjoyed the natural resistance of my body for my workout. I have never worked with a resistance band so I found this fascinating. I liked the mix of strength paired with balance.

Additionally, the cool down is absolutely wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed the stretches she put together. I wish I had this when I was pregnant. If you do nothing else, the cool down will bring respite to your wearied pregnant body (or post partum).

Finally, and probably the most important in my opinion, the workouts targeted areas specific to delivery. This is where I failed miserably in preparing for our natural birth. I did not ready my muscles in the specifics. Sure, I was general, but failed to work the correct areas of my hips and legs that were needed to support the seemingly endless ebbs and flows of labor. I think had I been better prepared physically, I would have been more effective in the pushing phase. I know better for next time. Dale’s workouts hit those areas that I found to tire most easily during labor and delivery.

In addition, I think it’s important to note that the exercises aren’t straight Pilates. So don’t shy away if you think you “aren’t into Pilates.” If you’ve taken an exercise class, then you’ve probably done some of her workout. I love how she incorporates Pilates into what is comfortable to do in order to get a good quality workout for Mom and baby.

What I did not like about the workout.

I did not particularly care for the music. If you depend on music to motivate you during a workout, then you might be a bit disappointed. At times I either couldn’t hear the music or thought it was a bit strange. However, Dale’s instructions are the focus of the video, and I rarely missed the music.

The warm-up was a little slow moving for me. I think the stretches and preparation are important, but I would get bored doing this part. In my opinion, this is the weakest part of the DVD.

Final Thoughts

This is one of the best workout videos I have done to date. I enjoy the flexibility of working out at home during Samuel’s naptimes. Pilates is my exercise of choice, and this video fit what I have been looking for. It was challenging enough to make me work, but modified enough to accommodate a pregnant or post partum body. I highly recommend it!

Here is a short video that gives a brief overview of the DVD from start to finish.

Dale Shea’s Prenatal Pilates retails at $19.95. For more information, you can check out Dale’s website – www.PilatesforMoms.com.

Book Review: Out of a Far Country by Christopher Yuan & Angela Yuan

When I was in college, I moved in with a lesbian. I needed a place to stay, and she was willing to open her extra room up to me. I bunked with her for an entire summer. Also, while in college and into my post college years, one of my best friends was a gay man. Throughout the last several years, I have interacted with and even prayed with people from the gay and lesbian community. What a privilege.

My heart runs deep for my friends and the gay and lesbian community at large.

Recently, I was given Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son’s Journey to God. A Broken Mother’s Search for Hope to read and review. Because of my experience, exposure, and love for this community, I readily accepted the opportunity and in return was deeply affected by this book.

As can be deduced by the title, the book is about a gay man’s journey to God, as well as a mother’s lessons in relinquishing all control of both her life and her son’s to her loving Savior, Jesus Christ. The format of Out of a Far Country is straightforward, and the chapters are woven together to tell the entire story from both sides – the mother and son’s.

While reading this book, I found myself shocked by the details. The details weren’t my experience with the gay and lesbian community. However, though at times graphic, I am aware that I needed to hear what Chris Yuan had to say. There is much to be learned about the gay and lesbian community. I needed to hear his experience. Even more than that, I needed to be reminded of the deceitfulness of my own heart regardless of my sexual orientation.

Five themes that I observed:

1. Roles within the family, particularly the husband and wife’s, needed to be clearly defined according to God’s standards. The Yuan family lacked leadership. The father was passive and often unavailable. Angela (the mother) expressed often her desire to have her husband’s support and voice speaking into Chris’s life. This didn’t happen. Eventually, Mr. Yuan did step into his God given role, but we see clearly the consequences of his inability and lack of care for leading his family.

2. There was a sense of wanting to belong among all the members of this family.

To quote Angela from chapter three (page 19):

All my life I wanted to belong. Belong to my parents. Belong to my husband. Belong to my children. But God was telling me that I didn’t belong to anybody on earth. I belonged to him.

There was a pattern of seeking acceptance and approval from one another. They placed their hope in the response of another member of their family. This often led to quarrels among them because they felt misunderstood and uncared for. They felt judged and unappreciated. How often can you relate to this misplaced faith in another?

3. Sin unexposed and unaddressed only led to more sin. There were small allowances for sin, which led to more allowances. The consumption of just one drink, or just one pill led to another small allowance. In the end, the baby steps of the hell bound race ended in a jail sentence and hopelessness for Chris.

4. Prayer is invaluable. Angela was a faithful prayer warrior for not only Chris, but others in her family and circle of friends. Her example of prayer and faith spurred me on to pray faithfully for those who I believe will never come to know the Lord. I watched God work through her prayers for her son. Her son was without hope. He met every effort she made to care for him with greater and greater opposition. However, she was faithful and she trusted God in ways that I find myself not doing on a daily basis. I am encouraged by her example of prayer.

5. Love covers a multitude of sins (Proverbs 10:12; 1 Peter 4:8). Once Angela and her husband realized that they must trust fully in God, they chose to love their son unconditionally. To see their example of love reminded me of the love we receive from our Heavenly Father. They exemplified the free gift of grace that we receive. They loved and loved and loved. Their love covered a multitude of sins and won Chris to the Lord.

I would highly recommend Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son’s Journey to God. A Broken Mother’s Search for Hope to everyone.

  • Your hearts will be illuminated.
  • Your prayer life will be spurred.
  • Your hearts will be filled with compassion.
  • You will be refreshed with hope.
  • You will be exposed to holy sexuality – the opposite of homosexuality is holiness not heterosexuality – which we all need regardless of our sexual orientation.

I don’t understand why certain people have certain obstacles to face in life, but I do trust in a sovereign and loving God. His desire is not for a single person to perish (John 3:16, 1 Peter 3:8-10). That is why He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. For my sins of self-sufficiency, unbelief, self-righteousness, pride, and the list goes on, along with the sins of those in the lesbian and gay community. Their sin nailed Jesus to the Cross just as my sins did. Just as your sins did.

Christ left us with a Great Commission to go and make disciples of all the earth (Matthew 28:16-20). All the earth, my friends. Not just those we can easily relate to. Not just those who are straight, but all the earth. All the people must hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ – the greatest news one will ever hear. How will our friends in the gay and lesbian community ever hear the truths of the Gospel if we harden our hearts against them? That’s what this book exemplified – a heart of a mother softened toward the son whom she loved with gospel eyes.

As Christians, we should come alongside our friends in their sins and struggles in hopes that the Lord Jesus Christ would reveal Himself. We know the truth that when Christ takes a hold on our lives that the bondage of sin is broken! We are free from our sin. We are unable to turn from our sins on our own. We need Jesus.

We must be the bearers of good news. We must be open to share with the gay and lesbian community, and I submit that as saddened as we get with their sin, we would become even more so saddened with our own sin.

I pray these things in the powerful name of Jesus Christ in hopes that your mind and heart would be opened, and those who are struggling with the sin of sexual immorality in the form of gay, lesbian, or straight would be saved. I long to see more lives changed for the glory of God. Out of a Far Country helped fill me with hope that as a Christian community we can change – we can love others, regardless of his/her orientation, in the name of Jesus Christ for the glory of God.

What are your thoughts on homosexuality? Do you think Christians do a good job of representing Christ to the gay and lesbian community?

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. This post contains my referral links. Please see my disclosure policy here.

I discovered ListPlanIt a couple of years ago while on the prowl for a way to get organized as a homemaker and wife. Although I was an avid listmaker, I wasn’t schooled in how to be run my household. When I wasn’t entirely sure where to start, I did a little research and found these lists ready and waiting on me. I was beyond excited. Still am to tell you the truth.

I love that ListPlanIt is a mom owned business! Therefore, the lists are made with fellow mamas in mind.  It is a place where those who simply love lists and those in need of a little assistance in mental organization can both find what they need. They have Hundreds of Checklists, ePlanners & More to Organize Your Family.

My homemaking binder is filled with pages from ListPlanIt. These lists certainly help me to be more intentional with my time as a wife, mom, homemaker, and now blogger.

I have used my membership at ListPlanIt to:

  • Plan ways to bless my husband. There are lists that help me to organize not only my ideas, but assign a day to each idea. I could probably do to make use of this list more often.
  • Menu Planning. I mostly use the monthly menu planning list. This helps me to look at my calendar in advance and plan my grocery list accordingly. This has been incredibly helpful in my freezer cooking plan. Once I’ve prepared all of my meals, I just log them into my Monthly Menu Plan list. I review this list each week to be sure I don’t need to make any adjustments.
  • Plan my grocery trips. When I was using coupons like crazy, I found her lists incredibly helpful because I could record the store, price, and coupon to be used. Again, I could probably do to re-visit this list in light of my current troubles of sticking to our budget.
  • Plan my blog posts. I can plan my posts out for the month with her easy to use lists.
  • Organize our finances. We have mainly used her lists to organize and set goals for each year. We can easily refer back to these lists to see the progress we are making. Additionally, I use these lists to keep track of our website log-ins and account numbers. It’s a good way to keep these hard to remember items close at hand.

This is just a small sampling of the ways that I have used the lists at ListPlanIt to help manage my household and stay organized. These lists have helped to revolutionize our intentional living.

How can you sign up? Glad you asked!

ListPlanIt has three levels of membership: Print, Download, and Professional. Once you’re a member, you will have access to the lists for one full year.

Personally, I chose the Download Membership. I like my lists neatly printed out. My handwriting can be a little questionable sometimes. So, I liked the fillable PDF sheets.

Not so sure if this is for you?

Then, you can grab some Free Sample Pages & ePlanner from ListPlanIt! I love that they are doing this now. When I signed up, all I had was word of mouth that I would like the lists that were offered. This sampling is great for whetting your appetite.

Personally, I love having these easy to print documents at my fingertips. Could I come up with these lists myself? Sure, but Now I Don’t Have to Create My Own To-Do & Checklists. List Mama Does it for Me!. Especially now that we have added a little munchkin to the mix, it’s nice that most of the work is done for me. Plus, I’ve found many more creative and fun ways to walk out this life with more purpose just by becoming a member of ListPlanIt.

I absolutely love this site and can wholeheartedly recommend it to you as a way to help you live your life more intentionally and have time for those things that you love!

Tell Your Time: How to Manage Your Schedule So You Can Live Free E-book

Recently, I have felt overworked - of course, based on my own self-imposed standards. I have felt overwhelmed - those pesky self-imposed standards again. The things vying for my attention daily, weekly, and monthly seemed endless.

  • The shelves are covered in dust.
  • There is no post scheduled for tomorrow.
  • I need to return my overdue library books.
  • Kefir needs made.
  • How did I get ten loads of laundry?
  • The milk needs to be picked up.
  • Have I even brushed my teeth today?

As a full-time wife, mom, and homemaker, I wear many hats and have many responsibilities. As a child of God, I am called to steward my time wisely.

Ephesians 5:15-16 says:

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Therefore, with all of that in mind, my questions as of late have been:

If all the things I am doing are important, or at the very least, good things, then how am I to know what is the best thing and most important thing for me to be doing right now? How can I be intentionalabout how I spend my days, weeks, months, and years?

Then, I found out about Amy Lynn Andrews e-book Tell Your Time: How to Manage Your Schedule So You Can Live Free. This e-book was a short, quick read. It took me all of 30 minutes (while baby boy napped) to devour it in its entirety. But what she taught me has had a long, lasting impact on how I order my days.

Good bye guilt. Hello freedom!

Tell Your Time: How To Manage Your Schedule So You Can Live Free outlines a straightforward, step-by-step approach to managing your schedule and ensuring the important things don’t fall through the cracks.

One of my favorite quotes from this book was:

Blaming time for my stressed life is really just a handy way of avoiding the discipline of patience and sacrifice.

Ouch! Hit me where it hurts why don’t you? Me, a mom? Not sacrificing? Me, a wife? Not patient? Surely she is not talking to me. And surely you know that I am only kidding. Of course, she was talking directly to me and directly to my heart!

The best part is that Tell Your Time only costs you $2.99! Less than the cost of a fancy coffee!

Friends, if you struggle with time management, and you want a practical way to learn how to live intentionally, then I suggest reading this book. But don’t stop there! Be sure to apply what you read!

So what are you waiting for? Go download your copy of Tell Your Time for just $2.99 and start living life free and for the glory of God!

What are other ways you have found to manage your time? What do your days typically look like?

Book Review – Digging Ditches: The Latest Chapter of An Inspirational Life

Digging Ditches: The Latest Chapter Of An Inspirational Life* by Helen Roseveare is by far one of the most inspiring books that I have ever read. This book spoke into the depth of my soul over and over again.

As I read the pages penned by Dr. Helen Roseveare, I was convicted of numerous areas of sin in my life. For sake of ease, I will bullet point.

  • Lack of faith in God’s goodness and purposes
  • Lack of trust in the Lord
  • Lack of concern for God’s Word
  • Lack of belief that what the Bible said could actually apply to any and all circumstances that I find myself in
  • Belief that God owes me the life that I desire
  • Self-righteousness
  • Laziness

I could go on, but you get the point. I am a sinner in need of God’s grace and mercy. As I grow in the graces of God, I believe it’s easy to think that I have arrived and that I have won the race. But the truth is we are running and will be running the race until we meet Jesus face-to-face. What He calls us to do this side of heaven is for Him to decide. Not us. Not me. It is for this reason that I recommend that you read this book.

Dr. Roseveare is a seasoned veteran for Christ. She has served in Congo as a missionary all the while enduring a Civil War, rape, and later caring for an elderly mother. As a result of an illness of her own, she was asked to take a leave of absence of sorts from full-time missionary work; thus, leaving her in a position to seek God’s will for her life. In her pursuit, she landed on 2 Kings 3:16. God gives us valleys and we are to dig ditches. This book is about those ditches that she must dig, while holding onto His promises to fill them, even if she never sees how.

Dr. Roseveare teaches us how to suffer for Christ, seek God’s will through scripture reading, and trust that God’s plan is the perfect plan. Truth be told, she is exactly the kind of woman that I want to be. I want to trust God as she trusts God. I want to read God’s word like she reads His word. I want to seek God as she seeks God. I want to use the gifts God has given me as she uses her God-given gifts. I want to make my life count for Christ as she made her life count for Christ.

Friends, it would be a travesty for you to never read her biographies. This is the only one I have read, but I will be reading more by Dr. Helen Roseveare. She is a remarkable woman and a remarkable witness for Christ. In addition, she is a fulfillment of the Titus 2 model of teaching. She is my older woman, and she has taught me so many lessons. Ones I hope to never forget. Ones that dug straight to my heart.

Please read this book.

Book Review: Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life* by Donald Whitney is one of the first books that I received as a new Christian. If you could see my copy, you would think that I must have had it for decades. The binding is coming apart. It has so many mark-ups you wonder why I even marked the book at all. It is probably the most well-worn book on my bookshelf. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t even go on my bookshelf. I keep it on my bedside table because I refer to it often.

In case you haven’t caught on, I really like this book. It is not a book that you must read straight through. However, I do recommend that you read it cover-to-cover at least once.

As a fresh convert, I was clueless as to what to do next. I had lived the previous 10 years of my life believing that I was a Christian. However, God graciously revealed to me that my obvious love for sin and lack of desire to turn from my sins was  a strong indication that I had not given my life to Christ.

I have always known that Jesus Christ was a man who lived a perfect life and that He died on the cross for my sins. I knew that I had to have faith in Him and believe that He had done all that the Bible said He did. Though these are true, there must be evidence of our salvation, and that evidence is a changed life for the glory of God.

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life* could not have been given to me at a better time in my life. I am so grateful for our church in providing this book to all the singles who went on the ski retreat. If you are like me, I took one look at this title and thought, “No way! I’m so not going to be able to do this.” In essence, I was right; however, by God’s grace and through much prayer, I have slowly but surely seen change in my every day living.

This book gives direction. This book meets you where you are. It explains many disciplines that Christians should be practicing day in and day out, as they seek to grow in godliness. It is packed with practical examples, and an abundance of grace filled exhortations. It’s frank, but gracious. It’s exactly what we as Christians need in a day when “feel good” and “prosperity” gospels are running rampant.

In this book, you will first learn WHY you need the spiritual disciplines. Then, he will takes two chapters go over the importance of Bible intake. Afterward he spends a chapter each on the following disciplines: prayer, worship, evangelism, serving, stewardship, fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, and learning. He ends with a chapter on persevering in the disciplines.

As a new Christian, this book was wonderful for me to just get a glimpse of what it means to live a disciplined, Christ-centered life. I didn’t understand all that the book talked about, and much of the concepts were more “advanced” than I could handle at the time. However, I was grateful for the counsel that I have received through many wise men and women at our church. They exhorted me to pick one area that I want to grow in and do it. Don’t try to change all at once. However, if you change one thing, other areas will inevitably change as well.

Now, two years later, I picked the book back up and read it straight through. I was amazed at God’s grace on my life. I could see areas in which I had grown, and I could understand many more concepts that were introduced. It was amazing, and very, very encouraging.

I say all of that to say, God’s grace is sufficient. It is easy to feel as though there is zero fruit being produced from your life at any given moment. However, that is a lie fed to us by Satan. My friends, God is at work in our lives. He is working in and through you to accomplish His will, if you are in Christ Jesus.

However, we must not forget that God has commanded us to pick up our cross and follow Him. Following Him means that we run the race so as to win the prize. We can’t sit around and wait for God to change us, we must PURSUE godliness, and we can PURSUE godliness by disciplining ourselves FOR godliness. This book can help you do just that! I recommend you read this book in its entirety, but then, refer back often as you seek to grow in each individual area. And don’t shy away from what you are not naturally good at. It’s amazing how much you can grow in the Lord when you make yourself vulnerable.

Overall, enjoy the process of growing in the Lord. Guard your heart against legalism, and rejoice in the fact that you are forgiven for your sins – the ones in the past, the ones in the present, and the ones that you will commit. You will fail in the area of the Christian disciplines, but you will bring much glory to God in your pursuit of becoming more like His son – Jesus Christ!
