Some days housework can seem like drudgery. Laundry piles the size of Mt. Everest, enough crumbs on the floor it could liken itself to a sandy beach and fingerprints on just about every surface of the house. Maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit, but I’m sure you’ve had times when doing household chores seemed pointless. Am I right?
As we begin the new year, we often take time to reflect on how to improve our lives and search for ways to do things better. While I believe it is admirable and necessary to work on ways to enhance our home management skills, it is also vitally important to strive to develop the proper mindset toward our homemaking duties.
“So then, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you may do, do all for the honor and glory of God.” -1 Corinthians 10:31
Our desire to bring honor and glory to God should be reflected in our daily routines and housekeeping task. Viewing our responsibilities as an opportunity to offer ourselves as living sacrifices is an act of obedience that is pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). Cultivating gratitude we begin to recognize that the never-ending chores are a blessing. Housework becomes worship when we align our attitude and actions with the Word of God. {Tweet this!}
“What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and work flow.” -Martin Luther
As Christian homemakers, we fix meals, vacuum floors and clean toilets for God. Our family benefits from all of our hard work, of course, but we are working for the Lord. Housework becomes worship as we strive to labor whole-heartily for the Lord. {Tweet this!}
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” -Colossians 3:23-24
As we begin to work on those homemaking goals we’ve set for ourselves, let us first come before the Lord in humility and allow His grace to bring us to a proper mindset. May we view our roles as homemakers to be what it is–a high calling from the Lord. And may we bring Him honor in all that we do.

Wow Jenni! What an eye opening and wonderful post. I’m not a SAHM (yet) but I know that I get burdened by the thought of cleaning toilets and doing laundry when I come home from working an eight hour day. I am going to have to look at my 7-4 job as working for God. I never thought of it that way. It makes me feel much better about it. Even thoughI would much rather be at home!
Alexandra- So glad this post was an encouragement to you today! And that’s great that you are applying this principle to your 7-4 job as well. We should strive to glorify God in all of our work–inside the house or out. Thank you for sharing and for your kind comment!

I try to work on this everyday. I read an article the other day that talks about the “heroic minute”. When we choose to get up and start doing instead of lazing about, we are heroes in our own house.
I made myself a chore schedule this week, and it has made everything seem doable

The “heroic minute”… I like that! Making the decision to take action (and have the right attitude about it) is very important. Thanks for sharing, Jenna!

I often feel like “why clean again when I just cleaned yesterday.” I probably don’t vacuum or sweep as often as I should because of that attitude. Thanks for some inspiration to get a new attitude about it!

It’s so easy to feel that way, Bonnie! It’s so nice to know that God views everything we do as important, isn’t it? Thank you for your comment!

This encourages my heart in a big way! Thank you so much for sharing truth and reminding me of the calling God has given me. My heart so desires to make my home a place of worship! I easily get discouraged and bombarded by all the responsibility. Thank you again!
Misty, I’m so glad you found this to be encouraging! I also get overwhelmed with the tasks and often must remind myself that God will equip me for what He calls me to do. Thank you for you sharing your heart!
