The concept I am discussing today is rooted in our very nature as humans. We know what we want so we vow to get it. We want something to be accomplished so we say, “I’ll do it my way!”
It may damage us, it may hurt our hearts. And friend, it will pull us away from the Lord. Adam and Eve experienced this very thing when they tasted of that sweet fruit in the garden on that fateful day.
If I could tear one page out of my True Woman 101 study it would be page 103. Even if you don’t have the book, read this so you are on the same page with me (pun intended):
“And since that fateful day [when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit], ‘I’ll do it my way’ has been the prideful inclination of every man and woman who has ever lived. We mess up our lives by refusing to accept God’s boundaries. We mess them up more by trying to cover the resulting problem with our own flimsy, ridiculous efforts. Instead of humbly submitting to God, we stubbornly refuse to believe that He knows better. We are literally ‘hell-bent’ to do it our own way.“
As followers of Christ we need to acknowledge something: We need God’s help and direction to fix things.
At times we receive His direction; a snippet of where He wants us to be. And we go with it. Sometimes we take off with it and forget to check in with Him, to make sure we are still on track. But we need to wait on more direction from Him!
Why don’t we wait? It is simple, really. We don’t want God to tell us what to do. If you are like me, you may think that is a machismo type of attitude. A soft submissive woman would never feel like this, right? Um, no. I think we may even feel it more than most men! Personally I think we are so used to controlling our schedules, to do lists, home school programs, errands, budgets and so on, that we forget we may not know what on earth God wants us to be doing.
We are so busy, we just don’t have time to wait for His way so we say: “I’ll do it my way!” We do it all (or we at least feel like we do!) so we easily (and understandably) feel like we know it all. We don’t. But He does.
Please, let go of your way. Savor the sweet, still moments of quiet. Ask Him. Where does He want you? What does He want you to do each day? Pray and ask Him to lead you, and find comfort in the fact that He will answer your prayer. But remember, the answer may not always look like you are expecting, but it is an answer. And it is a good answer. So listen. Wait. Be still.
God bless you, Sweet Reader. You aren’t in this alone. We all fight with the battle to “Do it my way” and there is only one way to win!
“You may get a bite of the ‘apple’ you wanted, but sooner or later, the fruit will turn sour in your mouth.” {True Woman 101 p. 105}
So share: Are you an “I’ll do it my way!” type of person?
Additional True Woman Reading:

I really needed to read something like this this morning. I am a control freak and I have been being more intentional lately about seeking God first in my decisions and my actions. This post was a good reminder that it’s not just the big things that I need to seek God’s direction, but even just the day-to-day. I’m doing the Beth Moore Breaking Free study and it is illuminating so many of the strongholds in my life that I need to surrender to God. Thanks for your encouraging words!
I love Beth Moore’s studies! I haven’t done a lot of them but I just finished the James study (Mercy Triumphs) and it was phenomenal! I am with you. I find it is easier to ask for the big stuff then the little stuff. We get in the rush of everyday life and quickly forget He who knows best! Thanks for leaving a comment…it is nice to know I am not the only one
